Fassbender Stevens Gallery is pleased to present a new body of work by San Francisco artist Amy Ellingson.

In her new work, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, Ellingson refers to the changing seasons in relation to the way our sense of time changes. Utilizing computer technology she recycles imagery - she samples, reconstitutes and rearranges typography, textile patterns, architectural embellishments, comic book imagery and advertising. This process creates a simultaneous synthesis between the gaudy, the frivolous, and the sublime. Ellingson works with pigmented encaustic - a fragrant, luminous and seductive material which is organic and warm, yet also dense and plastic-like - thereby moving the medium beyond paint toward "object". These lusciously finished paintings involve complex layers of geometric patterns; or vertical linear thrusts punctuated by a cacophony of dot patterns; and perhaps rhythmic shapes truncated and interrupted along stretched or pinched grids. Some include linear forms that allude to gravitational forces. What a wonderful use of contemporary technology to expand the possibilities of the visual arts!
