Fassbender Gallery is pleased to present new sculptures by Cologne, Germany native, Birgitta Weimer. Having recently moved to Chicago, this artist continues to explore systems, both natural and man-made, and how they relate to one another. Specifically, she addresses the similarities that become apparent between them in the way they tend to order themselves. She uses chaos theory to break down the artificial boundaries built up between science and the supposedly more subjective arts.

Visually, she creates simple, geometrical forms linked with more complex elements. She explores the wide range of plastic materials, from fluids and soft materials such as rubber and silicone up to wax or steel. She emphasizes the polarity of hard and soft materials with a preference for smooth surfaces and soft lustred colors. Her use of these materials tends to be elemental, and lend themselves to interpretation as variables in an ongoing experiment. The formal austerity of her work concentrates the observers attention in a meditative way. Her wall installations generate alchemical equations which put the visible into relationship with the invisible and materialize an enigma that escapes words. They weave new patterns of visual analogies between the poles of man and matter, body and soul, nature and technology. Birgitta Weimer creates images of resemblance and connectedness in the fragmented landscape of a contemporary world view.
