Chicago painter Ulli Rooney will be returning to Fassbender Gallery for her second solo exhibition with a new series of her subtle and distinctive Minimalist paintings. With these works, she continues to draw inspiration from natural landscapes and the changing of seasons. Having simple titles, these paintings present us with broad fields of color that have been repeatedly worked and re-worked
until they contain a tremendous quantity of depth. At first glance appearing monochromatic, these oil and enamel canvases collapse in upon themselves to reveal calligraphic scrapings when viewed more closely. Hints of her earlier figurative paintings peek through and can be excavated from the broad strokes of earthy color that cover her surfaces. Influenced by the Midwestern countryside that surrounds her on all sides in her adopted city of Chicago, this German native continues in the strong tradition laid down by many of the early color field experimenters from the Abstract Expressionist movement. In the artist's own words, "the surface of the canvas itself has become, through repeated overworkings, the sole object of (her) creative attention." Continue to artwork... |
