In her first solo exhibition at Fassbender Gallery, Holly Rittenhouse straddles the boundary between the botanical and the anatomical with her delicate wax works. Her wall-mounted plant samples resemble nothing so much as antiquated diorama components salvaged from some Victorian museum display of exotic seed pods and over-ripe fruits, surgically altered (or grafted) to mimic animal life. Her mutated menagerie of flesh-eating plants provide thinly veiled metaphors for the flesh. A recent transplant herself (to Los Angeles), Holly Rittenhouse received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992. |
