Fassbender Gallery, in conjunction with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, presented the unveiling of a public sculpture by Berlin-based artist Hubertus von der Goltz. The newest addition to Chicago’s long list of publicly commissioned artworks, Crossing portrays an aluminum man precariously balanced atop a steel perch twenty-five feet in the air. Placed in LaSalle Gateway Plaza on LaSalle Street, just north of the Chicago River, this artwork addresses the complex navigation of life as we approach the millennium. The figure’s tenuous pose contrasts with the surety befitting the statue of the goddess Ceres, visible on the nearby Board of Trade building. Situated at the north end of Chicago’s financial district and the south end of LaSalle Street’s retail strip, Crossing provides a bridge between the global and the local business worlds, as well as public and private lives. This sense is heightened by the identical views presented by the work when approached from either the north or the south. A public dedication ceremony was held for this sculpture at noon, on Friday, May 22, 1998. Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley was in attendance. |
