Fassbender Gallery is pleased to present Sequence, a new body of work by Berlin and Chicago-based painter Jens Hanke. Utilizing repeated motifs and uniform canvas sizes, this artist lulls us into a false sense of abstraction. Forever simplifying his compositions, he distills out the most basic communicative elements to get across a universal message. His all-over patterning and complimentary color palette makes the work glow with an almost decorative light . In the end however, these paintings prove to be powerfully meditative. They offer up secrets and talk to the viewer who has patience enough to listen. For the first time, text is introduced as a pictorial element in this new body of work. Floating isolated above vibrant fields of color, these words speak of the artist’s homesickness and the inability of an expatriate to really return home.
