Born in Eilenburg, Germany, and educated in Leipzig, Jens Hanke came to Chicago in 1994 on a German Government fellowship as a visiting artist at Columbia College.

At the time of my arrival I suddenly found all prior experience useless and learned patterns of behavior irrelevant. I discovered an external and detached vantage point from which I saw myself...A process of structuring began in which new experiences were stored and classified. Quickly a more and more compact framework ensued that permitted me to move in the new space. The series of paintings for this exhibi- tion is a kind of a visual cross-section of this process.
These paintings were grouped and rhythmically ordered to display a tangle, a web of ideas from disparate backgrounds and origins, with a series of poetic marks scribbled in the texture like points of emphasis floating in the web of meaning. In conjunction with this exhibition, arts critic Andrew Patner gave a lecture about artists' responses to rapid changes in the political, social and economic order and to geographic and emotional dislocation.
