Fassbender Gallery is pleased to present You Know I've Been at Sea Before a solo exhibition of paintings by Pamela Golden. Golden, a Chicago native, has been living and working in London for the past several years developing a new series of work based on found photographs from 1910 to 1940. The images deal with people and their leisurely appreciation of the sea. Allowing a pre-existing photograph to dictate a new image, Golden rebuilds each photo with thin layers of oil and encaustic on paper. The physicality is absolutely essential for me in terms of creating an engagement with the viewer. It is a particularly fine balance of exploring the space created in a photograph that becomes a painting, and where this takes us.
