PRESS RELEASE
Gerda Meyer Bernstein is an internationally known Chicago-based installation artist who addresses thorny global issues. Her work speaks through non-traditional materials, including discarded objects, transformed into emotionally eloquent environments.

Tribunal reflects on the trials of war criminals, it examines the ferocious and violent crimes committed against humanity during the Nazi period. The dimly lit bulb draws attention to empty chairs of witnesses whose voices have been silenced forever. On the gray table in front of the installation is a selection of some of the books that have most influenced and inspired the artist. They include various books and articles on Sinti and Romani, as well as all of Primo Levi’s books, which has inspired the artist for many years as a testament to the human spirit.

Tribunal calls on viewers to think about history and to take responsibility for the choices they make for our collective future.

Gerda Meyer Bernstein Windows seeks to help break the silence about the widespread practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). The artist was motivated to construct this piece by anger and outrage about the violence that has been committed against more than 149 million girls and women, 2 million each year, in at least 29 countries. Through Windows the artist speaks for those who have no voice. Windows breaks the silence, motivating the viewer to acknowledge and fight for the rights of others.

This will be the last exhibition for Fassbender at its 309 W. Superior location. Fassbender gallery will be moving into its new gallery space at 835 W. Washington on February 1, 2000.
