![]() Tribunal installation view (1999) Gerda Meyer Bernstein |
Tribunal On May 10, 1933 the Hitler regime burned 20,000 books. Sixty-six years later, more than 120,000 books have been published, including historical texts, memoirs and documents, that examine the ferocious and violent crimes committed against humanity during the Nazi period. In a monochromatic, solemn atmosphere of reverence, Tribunal reflects on trials of war criminals, such as the Nuremberg trials of the 1940s. The dimly lit bulbs draw attention to empty chairs of witnesses whose voices have been silenced forever. On the gray table in the front of the installation is a selection of some of the books that have most influenced my thinking, including books and articles on Sinti, Romani, homosexuals and political prisoners as well as of Primo Levi's books. Levi's work has inspired me for many years; his books are a testament to the human spirit. Tribunal calls on viewers to think about history and to take responsibility for the choices they make for our collective future. -Gerda Meyer Bernstein
