Fassbender Gallery is pleased to present new sculptures by Chicago artist Herbert George.
Mixing and matching a wide variety of materials, this artist creates storied sculptures that
seem to contain narratives within their convoluted shapes. Seeking to capture light and
motion in transcience, he presents shadows made real and usually inanimate objects in
flight. The artist himself calls them still-life sculptures, but to define them as such is to sell
them short. Kitchen implements fly, mirrors reflect light back upon itself, and shadows are
given concrete form. In his newest works, George has additionally carved portrait busts in
white marble. He explores the play of light and dark across the surfaces of these faces.
These shadows cast in a negative light are more than just umbras. Beginning as smooth
and streamlined shapes, they gradually blister and polyp, forming hundreds of fingers that
reach out to touch the surrounding light. Herbert George is attempting to capture time and
define the indefinable qualities of light and shape.
