Fassbender Gallery is pleased to present new sculpture and drawings by Barbara Cooper. With these new works, the artist continues her investigation of the persistency of life. Using common building materials, such as wood glue and strips of wood veneer, she creates imposing organic shapes that seem frozen in the act of growing and expanding. Most easily compared to plant life, specifically trees, these large sculptures echo and enlarge upon the creation and evolution of life that is all around us. The artist herself speaks of accretions, layering up slowly, like life experiences. She addresses this issue through the scarred and twisted trunks of these trees, bearing witness to the persistence of life, its tenacity and urgency. Like trees, we too are marked by our experiences, bending and bowed by our environment, but ultimately regrowing in new directions. Her recycling of tree-derived materials to create what are essentially new trees is a wry comment on the constant scavenging of the natural world that is regrowth. This will be Barbara Cooper's third solo exhibition at Fassbender Gallery. Continue to artwork...
