Fassbender Gallery is pleased to present A Eulogy to Beauty, featuring new paintings by Canadian artist David Bierk. In these works, he copies and collages images from the history of painting to alter, subvert, or just observe in a new light their original meanings. One mainstay of these borrowings are the idealized landscapes of the Hudson River School. Unlike many appropriation artists, Bierk re-presents them not so much for cynicism's sake, as to hold them up as lost examples and broken promises of what our society once hoped to become. Another common topic is Old Master still-life painting, with it's depiction of overabundance and waste. Collaging text over these images, he critiques Modernism, and by extension the modern world. However, he does so constructively, always offering hope of redemption.
