Fassbender Stevens Gallery is pleased to present new work by Berlin based painter Frank Badur. This will mark Badur’s first solo exhibition in Chicago. Frank Badur’s oil and alkyd on panel paintings are nothing if not austere. He removes all hint of the craftsman while leaving behind a high degree of craftsmanship. The artist presents a smooth and unmodulated color field. Utilizing the most rigorous minimalism, the paintings feature two colors in sharp edged counterpoint to one another. A rectangle or square will offset an accompanying and enfolding color. The colors battle one another for tonal supremacy, vibrating off the painted surface. Through these works, the artist expresses an ascetic and meditative spiritual experience. They present a wall of silence, radiating a mystique that is almost impenetrable. At the same time, these paintings may be interpreted in purely formal terms, as objects of decoration that are conceptually closemouthed. |
